Dr. Ryan Machiele serves our patients throughout the Triangle, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of eye diseases, including cataracts, glaucoma, and dry eye. He performs micro-invasive cataract surgery, a variety of intraocular lens implantation, glaucoma laser surgery, and micro-invasive glaucoma surgery.
Dr. Machiele was the president of his medical school class, receiving the Presidential Scholarship and earning recognition as Student Doctor of the Year for his leadership, professionalism, and commitment to service. He also led research efforts at Campbell University’s free clinic and was awarded multiple scholarships for his engagement in international medical missions around the globe including work in India, Ecuador and Jamaica.
During his residency training at the University of North Carolina, Dr. Machiele served patients from across the Triangle at the Kittner Eye Center as well as our nation’s heroes at the Fayetteville VA Medical Center where he performed hundreds of surgeries for veterans. While at UNC, Dr. Machiele spearheaded the integration of new surgical devices, published groundbreaking research, and completed advanced surgical training, being selected for the SCOR Advanced Cataract and Anterior Segment Course as well as the Harvard Cataract Course. Because of his attainment of superior surgical skill, he was selected as the recipient of the Surgical Excellence Award.
Before medical school, Dr. Machiele served alongside his wife as a staff member at the Black Mountain Home for Children in Black Mountain, NC, caring for over 80 children in the foster care system, while also working as a Wilderness EMT and field guide in the Pisgah National Forest. His extensive humanitarian work and crisis management experience, combined with his academic achievement and surgical expertise make him a compassionate, calm and skilled surgeon you can trust.
Dr. Machiele and his wife greatly enjoy life in the triangle, having been a part of communities in Lillington, Chapel Hill and now in Raleigh. They are active in their church in downtown Durham and enjoy cheering on the Tar Heels with their 4 kids and getting outdoors as much as possible.
