May 28, 2014 – Raleigh, NC – For the fourth year in a row, Raleigh Eye Center (REC) has awarded bilateral LASIK vision correction, a prize valued at $4000, to a Triangle area resident. This years’ winner is Raleigh resident, Amanda Smith. The contest required participants to submit a photo of them wearing goofy glasses. The photo that received the most votes won the grand prize of LASIK. The contest ran through May 15, 2014 and was managed on both REC’s website and Facebook page.

Having worn glasses since the 6^th grade, contest winner Amanda Smith has been dreaming about LASIK since high school. Amanda was tired of getting eye infections from her contact lenses and wanted to be able to enjoy the outdoor activities she loved without corrective lenses.

“I decided to enter the contest after hearing so many success stories from my co-workers who had LASIK at REC,” said Amanda Smith. “I never thought I would be able to win but figured I had nothing to lose, except my dreaded contacts and glasses,” Smith added.

For REC surgeon James Kiley, MD, the desire to give back to the same community that has supported him for more than 30 years runs deep.

“LASIK is something that most people that wear glasses or contact lenses want, but not all can afford to have,” said James Kiley, MD. “For the past four years our contests have improved not only the vision of area residents, but also their lives,” added Kiley.  

“I am so thankful that REC granted this opportunity,” said Smith. “I would not have won without the support of my friends, family and co-workers and I am beyond appreciative for each of their votes,” added Smith.

Amanda is planning to have her LASIK procedure at REC this summer and is looking forward to being able to enjoy life without the hindrance of glasses or contact lenses for many years to come.
