How to Know if Your Child Needs Glasses – Raleigh Pediatric Ophthalmologist

It’s no secret that vision problems can harm your child’s performance both in and out of the classroom. Here are some signs that your child may be struggling to see clearly. If you live in Raleigh and suspect your child needs glasses, make an appointment with our Raleigh pediatric ophthalmologist office here.

Squinting

By squinting, your child may be trying to temporarily improve the focus and clarity of an object. If you notice your child squinting, try to keep a record of when/how often he or she does it so you can see how frequent it is.

Tilting the Head or Covering One Eye

Both of these signs are ways children attempt to see more clearly. Head tilting and eye covering can also be signs that the eyes are misaligned, or that the child has amblyopia, one of the most common eye disorders in children.

Rubbing the Eyes Frequently

Excessive eye rubbing may indicate that your child is experiencing eye fatigue or strain. It could also be a sign of eye allergies or another eye condition.

Sitting Very Close to Screens

If your child sits close to the television, or holds a mobile device close to his or her eyes, it could indicate nearsightedness.

Frequent Headaches

If your child seems to have recurring headaches, especially at the end of the day, he or she may be placing undue stress on the eyes in an effort to focus.

Unusually Poor Schoolwork

If your child typically performs well in school, and there are no other conflicting factors, it may be a sign that he/she is struggling to see whiteboards, computers, books, or tablets.
