Learn more about optometry care in our blog!

When your optometrist examines the back of your eyes for signs of damage, he or she will use a device called an ophthalmoscope to shine a bright light into your eyes. You may have worried that this light is dangerous to your eye health. Here is everything you need to know about the optician’s light and its effects.

If you’re tired of wearing glasses and contacts every day, LASIK might seem like a tempting option. Though it is not without some risks, LASIK is a fast, painless procedure that can correct both nearsightedness and farsightedness. However, you have probably heard that LASIK is not for everyone. Here are some criteria your optometrist will investigate to determine if LASIK is an option for you.

If your eyes are itchy and irritated, then you may have an infection. You need to make a trip to a local eye doctor as soon as possible if you notice any signs of an infection. There are several types of eye infections.

Viruses, bacteria, fungi—there are plenty of this things that can get in our eyes and cause an eye infection. Below are some of the most common eye infections optometrists treat, and tips on how to prevent them. If you live in the Raleigh area and have itchy, red, swollen, leaky, or painful eyes, be sure to contact a Raleigh NC eye doctor as soon as possible.

For four years now, Dr. James Kiley of the Raleigh Eye Center has been giving away LASIK. The desire to give back to the same community that has enabled him to improve the vision of Triangle area residents for more than 30 years runs deep. This years contest however had a new twist. Entrants had to submit a goofy picture of them wearing glasses. Then it was up to the public to choose the goofiest one. The picture with the most votes won a $4000 unforgettable prize, LASIK vision correction. This years’ winner is Raleigh resident, Amanda Smith. We hope you will enjoy reading our interview with Amanda.

You may have experienced double vision after a particularly fun party, or an extra-exhausting shift at work. This type of temporary double vision is usually nothing to worry about.

If you’re hitting the slopes this winter, you may already be familiar with the term “snow blindness,” a painful, temporary loss of vision that usually affects skiers and snowboarders. However, you don’t actually have to be near snow to experience snow blindness—in fact, many cases are experienced in the summer. Keep reading to learn more.

Under the bright rays of a summer sun, it’s second nature to reach for a pair of sunglasses. Many people fail to provide their eyes the same protection during winter months, however! A brief exploration of the history of sunglasses leads all the way to the first pairs of “Eskimo Goggles,” many of which are now on display at the National Museum in Copenhagen. Such “glasses” were made of walrus-hide straps and thin oval-shaped animal bones with small slits carved through the centers.

Even though most parents try to stress the themes of love, togetherness, and generosity around this time of year, to kids, Christmas means one thing: toys. Since the vast majority of toy sales are made this month, we thought we’d devote today’s blog post to the toys that post the highest risk to kids’ eye health. We’re not saying to avoid purchasing the following toys altogether; however, your child is a bit accident-prone, it won’t hurt to choose a nice book or video game instead.
